If you’re wondering how I found your way into your inbox, perhaps it’s time for a little re-introduction. I’m Liv, an Australian living in Italy for the last 4 years with a big passion for food and wine. In fact, I run food and wine focused multi-day tours all over the country with Untold Italy and am in the process of getting my Italian Sommelier Certificate (plus am the co-founder of Italian Wine Tales).
I first moved to Bologna to learn Italian and then spent my first year working in agriturismi and wineries around the country. I wound up in Piedmont (Monferrato) for the wine harvest and then moved to Turin to work as an English teacher where I met my fiancé that very first week. I lived in Torino for a couple years before we made the big move to Rome last April after my partner, Andrea, found a great job opportunity here. And that’s the short story of how I came to call the Eternal City home…
July’s culinary tip from Nonna Amalia’s Kitchen
Andrea’s paternal grandmother, Nonna Amalia, was the real cook in the family. Unfortunately, I never got to meet her as she passed away many years ago. I think I would have loved getting to know her and her passion for cooking, gardening and of course her only nipotino (grandson) Andrea.
When we were still living in Turin, we cleaned out the family attic and found a real treasure trove of all of Amalia’s recipes lovingly typed up on a typewriter, some hand-written and other cutouts from old magazines. No one else was much interested, so I’m the official custodian of this amazing collection.
Amalia typed up a big list of ‘kitchen’ tips that I love and thought to share one a month with you for your own collection. Here’s her tip for July:
